Spring Somme Walk
This is my well established walk along tracks and over fields, mainly along the 'Old Front Line' from Serre to Maricourt, following the events of the 1st July 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. Later actions of the battle will be included as time permits.
The tour will be based at the 3-star Hotel Moderne, Arras.
The Dambusters
Spend a day looking at 617 Squadron’s Lincolnshire connections before travelling to the Rühr Valley, Germany, to visit the three primary targets attacked during this most famous Bomber Command action.
Two overnight ferry crossings on the Hull to Rotterdam route with cabin accommodation, dinner and breakfast each way, and three nights half board accommodation at the 3-star Hotel Püster, Warstein-Allagen, Germany.
The Canadians in Normandy
An overnight crossing on the Portsmouth to Caen route with dinner, cabin accommodation and breakfast included, will enable us to begin our tour on 'Juno' beach on the morning of 6th June. We will then follow the Canadian forces through their actions during the Normandy Campaign, including Operations 'Spring', 'Totalize' and 'Tractable', culminating with the closure of the Falaise 'Gap' in August 1944.
Two overnight ferry crossings on the Portsmouth to Caen route and two nights half board accommodation at the two star Hotel De La Poste, Falaise.
1st July Somme Anniversary Tour
Two and a half days will be spent on a detailed study of the 1916 Battlefield, visiting the surviving trenches at Serre and in the Newfoundland Memorial Park, Beaumont Hamel, Lochnager Crater, Delville and High Woods along with other sites, cemeteries and memorials. On the morning of 1st July we will attend the 7:30 a.m. 'Zero Hour' ceremony at the Lochnagar Crater and then the mid-morning service of remembrance at the Thiepval Memorial. There will be some walking opportunities.
The tour will be based at the 3-star Hotel Moderne, Arras.
Fromelles
In 2008 grave pits, which contained the remains of over 200 British and Austrailia soldiers, were discovered next to Pheasant Wood, Fromelles. The excavation and reinterment of the remains, almost certainly from the action at Fromelles on the 19th July 1916, will see the first new war cemetery to be made for over 50 years. This special tour is planned to coincide with the dedication of the new Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery on 19th July (subject to confirmation). Other 1915 battlefields in Northern France will be included in the tour.
The tour will be based at the 3-star Hotel Moderne, Arras.
Wings Over The Somme
The Great War saw the fledgling air services of both sides develop from the small ill-equipped forces of 1914 to the large sophisticated air arms of 1918. My tour will look at the aerodromes and airmen, both Allied and enemy, in the Somme area. Part of our tour will follow the last day in the life of the 'Red Baron', Manfred Von Richtofen.
The tour will be based at the 3-star Hotel Moderne, Arras.
Cambrai
This tour will visit the important battlefield where tanks were used en masse for the first time on 20th November 1917. Over 300 British tanks over-ran the German defensive positions, the Hindenberg Line, and established the tank as the dominant weapon of land warfare in the 20th Century. The tour will follow the course of the battle with visits to the cemeteries and memorials associated with the action. There may be some walking opportunities.
The tour will be based at the 3-star Hotel Moderne, Arras.
